Beetroot for Good Digestion
Raw beetroot and beetroot juice is currently receiving a lot of attention for its ability to improve digestive function. It is particularly helpful in supporting the liver and gall-bladder as it aids in the digestion of fat.
Beetroot is also very helpful for hypochlorhydria or low stomach acid, a very prevalent condition these days and one which is often mis-diagnosed. Hypochlorhydria can occur due to stress, a poor diet, excess alcohol or not chewing food properly. Hypochlorhydria can result in poor digestion of food, mal-absorption of important nutrients from your food (iron deficiency anaemia, B12 deficiency etc), fermentation and bloating (IBS), food intolerances or allergies and bacterial and yeast infections. The betaine in beetroot helps to increase stomach acidity which in turn helps to control bacteria and yeast in the system.
Ways to include beetroot in the diet:
- Grate or finely chop a medium beetroot in a food processor and mix in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of flax oil or extra virgin olive oil. Add to salads or as a side dish with cooked meals.
- Beetroot & Apple Salad – add a grated or finely chopped eating apple to the above.
- Juice it – juice one medium beetroot with 2 carrots, an apple, a stick or two of celery, some cucumber and a little root ginger.
- Blend it – in a high-powered blender or smoothie maker, blend 1 small to medium beetroot with 2 glasses of water and some fresh herbs such as mint or parsley until very smooth; squeeze in the juice of half a lemon or lime and drink between meals for good digestive and liver health!
